I'd be a bit further on if I hadn't had to frog it a couple of times, due to the colors. I finally had to ditch the light yellow (actual name was Carmel), it just wasn't working. And I started a completely new project - stripping my kitchen table. I've been sanding it down to the natural wood. It has been such a huge eye sore for such a long time. I have no pictures of the ugly table, just picture the Walton's table and you've just about got the image...benches and all.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1wEHltu0Q5sXZVSOSWdRfikuGsJaS75K_ovxjclVV8cy7go2jg2In3jjkOCaz8D27AiG1NvVzLU7mWb7WeYlycncIqnkWv74XnhMsFrykN6Ley4wFNucDF2Lqk71rX-lTEKTSi8amhmWC/s400/100_2056.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5667541570225199458" />Juliejazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912860396602933708noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4085836747104306474.post-15058589263212863412011-10-17T08:14:00.000-07:002011-10-18T13:01:42.826-07:00Crochet WIPSI have to admit I haven't been doing too much with my quilting projects, but I have been working on crocheting things.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5EFWYFaD_yNzCXb6O1mvZ3CwwgwYTfSqkzrA_4WhAc6H4qkrFwnNUsm4crH-Dvnu8mc4bq6GrobtVtrTBaLb_rg36e64WFQ9wmQg5jaFLYyUgr8LpMZsxTFnaMnJNnaPBTRutatBb7sRL/s400/100_2041.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664480720893569938" />

Granny rectangle love! I started this for my 12 year old who loves blue. He doesn't know I'm making it for him. Every time he sees me working on it he grabs it and and say's. "This is mine because it's blue. When are you going to finish my blanket?" I keep telling him I'm making it for my bed:)I don't think he's buying it since my bed is king sized.

Socks!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300pxhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5xkdyzxTaqUJgQUUhRh7TqnHFD0RkgcyvPaitVEQuwYi_3sp7dCmMcrDWKkMS0cbvWGLZUhuU47JPNoAs0T2FLxQiqVcdec0bvoOepKsQ0EJUAXKQKPfSrY5BZsuw1BtM6AIzqJFla7dC/s400/100_2046.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664481908068191218" />

I'm teaching myself to knit socks, its slow going. I've made it to the heel flaps though. I read that socks aren't as hard as the pattern suggests and that all you need to do is trust the pattern and not think to much about how it isn't making sense. I'm hoping this doesn't end up as a second sock syndrome.

Lovely ripples

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgukxaXrBaEY4X-aeDmKewELApVJTefsJHAXuEl4JL04UJfS51cpVrlbrtv3TJ5Vxkc8IsRqDE1B1BMLQcaVW2jHQA59zyp613i88a1YKNsJpJ9HDPB5SIPSgdyTiyPZNaodsaqIlggr4k/s400/100_2043.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664484749452481986" />

And then I was perusing my favorite crocheting blogs and found that Lucy of Attic24 and Heather of Little Tin Bird are having a ripple along and I couldn't resist. I don't like the first three colors together though. Navy blue, a light yellow and red. It looks a little patriotic and I like patriotic, but I didn't want to start out that way and then drift into other colors. I'm going to have frog it back to the the blue:0/

Those socks (maybe if I think plural, the second will get finished) are being made from a wool blend and boy is wool itchy! It's my first time of working with wool. The granny and the ripple are Red Heart supersaver yarn. My favorite acrylic is Lion's Vanna's choice, but I'm making both of these for my younger boys and they drag their blankets everywhere. I don't really like Red Heart supersaver yarn, but it's cheap and comes in a huge array of colors and as everyone say's, it wears like iron. I also noticed that after it has gone through the dryer with a few dryer sheets it softens up pretty well. It also doesn't make my hands itch like the wool does. I would like to try Style Craft acrylic yarn, but I've never seen that in a store here in the US. I'd love to be working with the yarn, Lucy and Heather are using, but I can't afford Debbie Bliss Cashmerino...sadness!

Edit!

I completely frogged the ripples. I measured it on the intended bed and found it a little too wide for a twin with he ripples going across the bed and a little too short for ripples going the length of the bed. I started over with green and my first row has 280 stitches with 20 peaks and valleys.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR50UQ0uCHl1bMuQrBibNQZ5-n0qJsvz6ovccPUbAIPufwI92KhE7-B_Y3_fdRS8-Y0ftjy2vmh7lVaPVQpE5lVmUT_I27zO7jfoySof0xsYtet-33_ZkYe7tdYwJBURVD-od6df9VMmtT/s400/100_2047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664601287433471554" />

Do you see the crochet hook? I had good intentions about blogging everything I created. It didn't quite work out like that. I'm going to try and do better, not that I have a huge following, but it is a good place to document my creations.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfkGlfewjITdE3mPrwqnjRSzBrW3oHT6VtqydGLcrmswRHva_lKlWlQXoQogE1wkG3xqwEOAwTSGHqiTt_shztF8wU98AHDt1V5y7zUNPakaYS4kkHHF_rrJduyz9UET7nGW8LObMSI1Er/s400/100_2035.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5649735815107573730" />

Anyway I decided my butterfly quilt really needed to be finished. I've had that project hanging wayyy to long. I laid them out and found I need to make 6 more blocks, so I did that and then began to square them all up. Yeah - something went dreadfully wrong. I'm not quite sure how I managed it, but about one third of my blocks are a half inch off. I tossed them in my basket feeling a puzzled about how I managed that horrible trick and frustrated that I'd done that. As near as I can figure I must have cut the them wrong. I didn't cut everything out first, so I'm thinking I cut those 1/3rd separately and measured wrong. Funny thing is that I when I cut out the last 6 blocks I couldn't remember and had to check the tutorial for cutting dimensions - those 6 were perfect. So now instead of putting my blocks together I'm trimming 2/3rds of them down to 6 inches.Juliejazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912860396602933708noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4085836747104306474.post-10038125591607889282010-12-30T13:22:00.000-08:002010-12-30T14:41:35.581-08:00Headbands/ear warmers<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 125px; height: 125px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7LTH_jSGOqeFM0cgOaXl8Wh-dxGjrrVb9YQi4A6-6wu5c8eB8zcc_zJ2tNaEkiq5Zu42UkvR_yWG8VN_fTVzA93Upd8P-y1fUCpdqNyJqtNyQMvBKS6dIc6kuNIdPMLo1Shi7zOLfHuhn/s400/Headbands+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5556601324055756082" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 125px; height: 125px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_vPqf5ZQcg2_1Dt2DvWSTP1_ZF4T-BLrL137WAEJ_anffSoxtPCqJbpzKJVaERW405eNYtw4tk_7KFsiRkNc2vf1nQ_85CwaGhBHGBSFxx5IVUTiXHau8ZVYyIbs39Ysz4gQIe_-aSxiW/s400/headbands+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5556601316492868674" />

I've been making these cute little headbands that keep your ears warm. I had everything except my fabric in my little corner of the kitchen and aptly named myself, Kitchen Quilter. Well I had to move from that home and into one that doesn't have a lot of room in the pocket size kitchen. The dining room and living room are one large long combination room and my quilting stuff was quickly taking over both spaces...plus we had just about stop eating at the table because my stuff took up half the table. In this little house I also had the largest bedroom. Three of my daughters share one room, it was a smaller than mine. Three days ago we decided to switch bedrooms around. My sons were staying in their own room, it's the smallest of the bedrooms, but there are only 2 boys in the room so it works. My oldest daughter has as odd shaped room that isn't really a bedroom but it works for her. I had the big room...a room without much storage.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNNouXSqs6jOl9TJJ6JhtgO9GVWVgZI-gPc8riWkTyj3PquOCPwg0J1o6jFsyc6p4gf7ghZAw49WAXSwpCXHyYSS1PDzZiH0T5LrskDIAboEXRABqfdmBQGLMvNcymSkcpNiAhskriHEdk/s400/100_1874.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499741388699070674" />
The three middle girls were crammed into a mid size room with lots of storage.
We spent one day getting everything moved around and then I spent another day getting all my quilting stuff put away in actual drawers and in cabinets...including my fabric, it's out of the boxes and plastic totes for the first time.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyd3cZyQZH3PqPjOjZlZOMtX8wUofttUhckaCl299wP-H39DhZ_KmvhZFb1L9aq8ZF1f09seNkL33M-fr_H_-DaBVGNXsM9EumFLb4dstS4eYl2uDh__1FiIHIHUFCQQGBlfGPRA-0kVzP/s400/100_1876.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499742717716603650" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdS2DwxNURAzJG126CKSaF1T6B5SADf5AylgkZzTtEmVG1VjrJ-lsU1CGPboISGoMuHJRttj-4PJr9yIj_Hnvf341SRsKISzmCSGCC5v-wq2tuGJJuCmaJOsokBiVMAHHUwTi11TKf0EzI/s400/100_1875.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499742708610594978" />

Not a lot of fabric by some standards (mostly mine), but it's all put away in such an organized way...at least for me and I'm happy with it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOTWh6lbgPnbqrMPYVzjcZKxSRIrrIUb39Jah01HO8PDnoKJnm7vpLaZ13k48dHJuNNTLQ4mzLX9MbWR1LlE_7O_j36cxJ2kkXxI_RkROyoWeuutfKqIewIsrWFPFYMRmzhVoUcbRg5pTT/s400/100_1873.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499743518104256834" />
But I think I'm Bedroom Quilter now. But! I started the hexies almost 4 months ago. My mom came for a visit and got me hooked on them.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid_D3nUEzxEndVXxFtKJVAALDbSI3BvYUZT0hj_0xvh3rICHDQWKtbWNT5McvV1Uo0DkFUipPMccoOrhBCcoDMB24TA4t7TXnrPl2f-pAhYGcrcMgNN11YeRRWgX5yAcVDRM2w-P0UrsRx/s400/100_1864.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499454597296461874" />
Most people are making them a little smaller than the ones I've been making. It was Lori over at Bee In My Bonnet that got me started. Then I found myself following a link from Lori's blog to Amy's blog, Mrs. Schmenkman Quilts and from there I began to think I couldn't live (small exaggeration) without making some of my own butterflies.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 258px; height: 258px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV9Mv1WYstV1s6tQ8gqensv6l2z2yWQdRC4VOPvwLqVBq050yExHGN0yB1R3keBb6yUb-rbCoyA_NP3vyFUDV63ATZf1Mykro-3J3JwTPhCzlypYQ67jqUlI6tTxb6e_608M8QxqOjDhQI/s400/Butterflies+in+progress.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496241590726805138" />
I started with pulling out anything and everything I could find that might make some pretty butterflies.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 258px; height: 258px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCgsUrcEwA7gqNY8IkkEX82cngolhpgXjT68dZLr-lmKHnAl4s85yD00atlheeSJlKYuT8cgtUCBvg5XlxksoYc2UGcBHHZdmt_LgurlmZa9DAtujojZ4X-V4WK_KIpH8yBXudAVupUkeq/s400/Flutterbies.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496247439235178178" />
I started last night and after lots of cutting and a couple of mistakes I ended up with 17 butterflies completed and another 58 that are cut out. This morning I counted and found I need a few more fabrics...like only 150 more. Eeek! I'm wondering were I'm going to come up with that many different fabrics. I think I may be using a few of the fabric pieces I vetoed with my first run through my-not-quite-big-enough stash. I think I need about 220 blocks for the size I'm after.

And I'm still sorry that the pictures aren't very good. The lighting is bad and so is the cell phone camera. Tomorrow I am going to have to break down and buy some batteries for the good camera.Juliejazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912860396602933708noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4085836747104306474.post-820802298382474482010-07-17T19:57:00.000-07:002010-07-17T20:08:09.067-07:00An almost finish!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 258px; height: 258px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyVEwAvsWpn54xH_hg4hMDTvDeRJ-xl9YyOxe8uGf1CBZhLY1RNt1cXu_x2rSc8K9qCFYc8lTkf6EV3yQ7vlNkpKzENkn859E_LuVAxmOlzq_QMLvltdcdEUst-Ga6QnFqlWm41H-wrtB1/s400/Colors+and+spots.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495076725267738530" />

This is something I've been working on for a while and it's almost finished. I've home schooled these 3 kids their whole lives and now they're in public school. I missed them terribly! The house was too quiet. I wondered and fretted about how they were getting along with the new environment. I worried that they wouldn't be happy and worried they'd be sad. I shouldn't have. They had a good day and can hardly wait to go back again tomorrow. The other 3 kids (who are teenagers) will continue their studies at home through an online academy - that's what they chose. They also missed their younger siblings and worried about the same things I did.

Juliejazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912860396602933708noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4085836747104306474.post-19046806645792144742009-08-23T15:24:00.000-07:002009-08-23T16:32:56.815-07:00Almost done!I'm done with the piecing of my string quilt. Cool beans....at least I think so!

Meanwhile, I stayed up much too late last night working on my string quilt. I have 7 more blocks to make. I'm so excited! It's been fun. At first I thought maybe I had too many strings and would have bunch left over. I didn't really want a bunch leftover and was a little bummed that I had miscalculated and cut too many, but nope, I'm now worried that I'm going to run out of a the 2 fabrics that I have consistently put in each block. I put my house up for sale and have been doing lots of cleaning and several of my children decided they wanted to make quilts and something. I've also been working on my string quilt. I don't often give myself praise, but I think it's turned out beautiful. She had never used a sewing machine before and had a lot trouble with her quarter inch seams, her blocks turned out a little wonky. I named her quilt Wonky Squares...totally original huh?

I have one more quilt to show, but I can't because I don't have pictures that I can get to. When I find the cable to the camera I'll post them. Fifteen year old dear daughter didn't have the memory card in the camera when she took pictures of her quilt and I can't get to them without the camera cable. And she already gave the quilt away so I can't get a picture of it unless I corner the lady at church next week - I may do that!
Juliejazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912860396602933708noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4085836747104306474.post-74741318824250143732009-08-03T07:33:00.001-07:002009-08-03T09:54:49.298-07:00Strings!I did it, I started a string quilt. I've been collecting asian type prints for almost a year now. Some are more asiany (i know - not a real word) than others, but I think it's working. This quilt isn't made of really good material. I bought the material from Walmart long before I realized that not all fabric is made the same. I just thought I was getting a really good deal, it was 1$ a yard and I bought a lot of this stuff thinking I could use it in so many ways. After I realized that the fabric was seriously cheap I knew I would be using it for the back as well (an attempt at getting it used up). I still have about 1/2 yard of several of the colors. I figure I'll let my girls use it for their practice blocks that they are planning.

It's not quite long enough for a twin bed, it was supposed to have 18 geese in each row. I only ended up with 16, but didn't want to have more than one color in each row. I did manage to stick 2 purple colors together, but they aren't the exact same shade of purple. The picture makes the 2 colors look identical though. Since the quilt isn't big enough for a twin bed, it will be a quilt the kids can drag to the couch when it's cold and it's gets plenty cold here in Idaho. I feel achomplished! I finished it. I have nothing else started, so YAY! I get to start another project today.Juliejazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912860396602933708noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4085836747104306474.post-91486149516315254042009-07-29T20:38:00.000-07:002009-07-29T20:55:27.889-07:00p.s. i quilt GiveawayThis is kind of fun. I used to visit a handful of web sites on everything from diets to family life and to playing computer games, but in the last few months I very rarely spend any time reading anything unless it's a blog on quilting. I've got a long list of favorites that just keeps on growing. I keep reading about these great online quilting bees and some pretty cool giveaways and I want in on all the fun...so here I am, my name is Julie.

I'm really pretty new to quilting. My history started with an 9th grade project, it was a small pillow and I got an A+. After the pillow I took a 30 year hiatus from the world of quilting. Almost 2 years ago my mom heard me complaining about wanting a new quilt for my bed, but was unable to buy the one I wanted. She told me she'd help me make one and quilting reentered my life again. In hindsight I should have picked a small project, instead I jumped with both feet right into making a king size quilt. The pattern was easy, a log cabin, from one of Elenore Burns' books. Due to having a large number of kids at home, being a procrastinator, not having a good sewing machine, not having a dedicated room just for sewing and being one of those folks who are great at starting projects, but not so great at finishing things...it took me 6 months to finish it. Once I finished it I found I didn't really like it. I could see so many flaws, it hadn't turned out like I thought it would, it didn't have that perfectly well crafted look that I had envisioned. I began to think maybe quilting just wasn't one of my talents. The one thing I couldn't seem to keep from doing was buying fabric. I didn't buy a lot, so my stash isn't large, just one large plastic bin - that's completely full.

A few months after finishing my log cabin quilt I decided I'd give it another try. This time I opted for a smaller quilt. A twin size Flying Geese, again using an Eleanore Burns pattern book. I had all the geese made when my old sewing machine died. I had it fixed several times, but the fixes just didn't last. I borrowed a machine from my mom and realized that the reason my first quilt came out wonky was because my machine was fighting me in keeping a good 1/4 seam. The fabric would constantly pull toward the left and gave me a very uneven seam. The Flying Geese blocks had the same issues and mom needed her machine back, so I laid away the idea of quilting until I was able to get a new machine. A couple of months ago I was able to buy an Elna Q6600 machine and I love love love it! I am now back to quilting.

This was my very first attempt at stippling. I finally settled on Kitchen Quilter because I don't have a room that is dedicated to sewing. In the past I've used the kitchen table, continually having to put away my sewing things to feed my family. I disliked having to do that just enough that I didn't sew that often. Once quilting became important to me and I had a good machine I decided that one corner of my kitchen was going to be my spot. So...Kitchen Quilter I am.

Juliejazhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05912860396602933708noreply@blogger.com1
